Johnny Appleseed

September 26th is John Chapman's birthday.  He is better known as Johnny Appleseed and is known today for introducing apple trees to several states.  Fall is a wonderful time to enjoy all kinds of apples.

We the Kids...

We observe Constitution Day on September 17th with lessons and activities leading up to that day.  This book breaks down the preamble so kids can understand it, too.

Is this really a diary??

Greg Heffley is NOT writing a diary - it's a journal but his mother brought the wrong type of book.  Six books later and he's still writing.  Book 7, The Third Wheel, is coming out November 13!

Summertime and the reading is easy...

Summer is coming soon and we need to make a plan... to read!

Hungry for more like Hunger Games?

The Hunger Games trilogy is wonderful to read but not appropriate for our K-4th library so I thought I would spotlight the author of the series, Suzanne Collins, and the series she wrote before Kat and crew: The Underland Chronicles. The first book in the series is Gregor the Overlander and it is awesome!
At one point, while reading the second book in the series, Gregor and the Prophecy of Bane, I was so shocked by something that happened that I had to put the book down.  But, of course, soon enough, I picked it right back up and finished that book and the next three.  Love them!  I think you will, too, if you like fantasy and adventure stories.
I know these books already have fans at our school.  I just looked at our library catalog and all five are checked!  Fantastic!!

I'm a poet and I know it...

See how I just made a rhyme??  So can you because anyone can be a poet!  I just know it!
I also know April is National Poetry Month and our 800 section is chock full of poetry books waiting just for you.

One of my favorite children's poets is Shel Silverstein and our library has a book of newly discovered poems called Every Thing on It.  Thank you, Mr. Silverstein!

A hundred years ago...

on April 14, 1912, the Titanic sank on her maiden voyage and there are still books, TV shows, and movies that show the ongoing fascination with this ship.  We have several books about the Titanic and there are more written all the time.  Here's one of the favorites from the Carol Holt library:
