Thanks, Sarah!

Who is Sarah?  Sarah Hale, of course!  Sarah Hale should be thanked for Thanksgiving.  She was not a pilgrim and she was not at the 1621 harvest celebration (later known as the first Thanksgiving) but she was very important in making sure our country celebrates Thanksgiving today.  Read this book and click on the links below to find out more about this woman and Thanksgiving.

Butterfly in the sky!

Now that you are humming the Reading Rainbow song, check out these links about butterflies.  Some classes watched a distance learning program about butterflies and we learned the monarch butterflies migrate through Texas in the fall as they head south to Mexico for the winter.  So look all around for butterflies in the sky!

Listen up!

As much as I love to read stories with my eyes, I also love to hear stories with my ears.  Some of the best stories are the ones we tell each other!

Our Constitution and Freedom Week

We observe Constitution Day on September 17 during Freedom Week September 15-19.  Here is a wonderful book that explains the preamble so kids can understand it, too:

Fancy that!

One of my favorite fancy characters is Fancy Nancy.  Our school is planning a Fancy Nancy / Handsome Harry Day on April 26.  We will dress in our Sunday best and practice our best manners all day long!

Texas, our Texas!

There's a lot to learn about our state's history and a good day to start is on March 2nd, Texas Independence Day.  Here are some good places to start:

ThingLink doesn't work on our Nooks that we use in the library so here are the links:

Love is in the air!

There are lots of gooey sweet books about love to read for Valentine's Day but I don't usually read those.  However, I am up for goofy, silly Valentine books any time.  Here is one of my new favorites:

Links will be added soon.

A part of all our history...

Bud, Not Buddy by Christopher Paul Curtis is a Newbery winning historical fiction that tells of a young boy growing up in the Great Depression. This is one of many books that tell part of our history - African American history.

Hobby, hobby, hobby!!

Do you have a hobby? A hobby is something you like to do for fun and relaxation.  You could build or make things like birdhouses, scrapbooks, or train sets, collect things like stamps or playing cards or enjoy things like books, movies, and video games.

Maybe you can find a new hobby by looking through the 700s in nonfiction.  There are lots of art and recreation books to help you decide.

What's black and white and read all over?

I love reading and learning about polar animals like polar bears and penguins and I bet you will too after checking out the links.  You should check out the book below - it is a funny story that sneaks in math.
